New Mexico’s AI Hub
NMSU’s Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning (IAAM) connects NMSU’s AI research, education, and industry partnerships to put artificial intelligence to work for New Mexico — in the field, not just the lab.

Three Ways We Make an Impact

Research
Faculty and students across NMSU’s colleges collaborate on AI research applied to real-world problems — from precision agriculture to smart water systems to AI-assisted healthcare.

Education
We’re building AI literacy at every level — K–12 outreach, undergraduate programs, graduate fellowships, and faculty development — so New Mexico’s workforce is ready for what’s next.

Partnerships
We work with industry, government, and community organizations across the state to make sure our AI work solves problems people actually have — and creates opportunities in New Mexico.
AI at Work in New Mexico

Agriculture & Food Security
NMSU researchers are applying machine learning across New Mexico’s farms and rangelands — from predicting crop yields and detecting pests to monitoring livestock and optimizing grazing. This work is helping producers make smarter decisions in one of the country’s most resource-constrained agricultural regions.
Water & Climate
AI-driven models are helping water managers across the Rio Grande basin make better decisions about allocation, forecasting, and drought response. With water scarcity one of New Mexico’s defining challenges, NMSU researchers are putting machine learning to work where it matters most.

Cybersecurity & Privacy
NMSU’s cybersecurity researchers are developing AI tools to detect threats, protect critical infrastructure, and identify false intelligence before it causes harm — while training the next generation of security professionals to defend systems that communities depend on.
Part of Something Bigger

IAAM anchors NMSU’s role in the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium (NMAIC) — a statewide network connecting universities, national labs, state agencies, and industry to build a coordinated AI ecosystem across New Mexico.
