AI Research That Works – In the Field, Not Just the Lab

NMSU researchers are applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the problems that define life in the Southwest: water scarcity, agricultural productivity, energy reliability, cybersecurity threats, and more. IAAM coordinates and amplifies that work — connecting researchers across colleges, disciplines, and institutions.

Whether you’re a faculty member looking to connect with collaborators, an industry partner looking for research expertise, or a student looking to get involved in cutting-edge AI work, you’re in the right place.

Featured Projects

Predictive Soil Mapping

NMSU researchers are building predictive soil maps that use machine learning to turn half a million soil observations from across the U.S. into accurate, high-resolution data. The result: better understanding of ecology, erosion, water movement, and weather patterns — and more informed land management decisions for farmers, ranchers, and policymakers across New Mexico and beyond.

Precision Ranching

NMSU researchers are creating and applying AI to transform ranching across New Mexico’s arid landscapes. By predicting grazing behavior and calving events with real-time data — through virtual fencing and connected sensors — NMSU has monitored livestock and rangeland across more than one million acres of arid and semiarid land.

Advancing AI Itself

NMSU isn’t just applying AI to solve problems — we’re working to make AI better. NMSU researchers are developing more accurate and efficient machine learning models while building tools to evaluate AI performance. A key focus: detecting and mitigating false intelligence, so AI systems can be trusted to deliver reliable results.
